I am a newbie to the site and into the seadoo world. I just purchased my first jetski a few weeks ago. I have a 1994 seadoo xp with a new rotax 657 engine in 2010. I was able to take the ski out for a trial run and it ran like a top.
I just havea few questions to get me on the right track for maitenance. What if any matenance if any should i do before i drop it in the lake for the summer? What oil is good to run in the xp model?
I really dont want to buy the seadoo oil unless its highly recommended ($55 a gallon around me) 3.should i do anything to the ski after i ride it? (we have a cottage and are up there weekly) 4. What fluids for what should i check? Any other input/ideas on ANYTHING is welcomed like i said all the boating is new and i know absolutley nothing about service or how to properly maintain. And every time i google something i always see the site:thumbsup: i really appreaciate anything and everything the you guys throw out there for me! Welcome to the forum JSup. A few general things to do: 1) check to see if it has gray fuel lines.
If so, change them out. 2) run a compression check on both cylinders. It should be 135 or higher. 3) check the wear ring and impellar. If you just tested it, there is nothing that would have to be done.
Maybe fresh spark plugs. The Quicksilver PWC oil, available at Walmart, should work well in your machine and cost about half of what you are seeing with the Seadoo oil.
The Amsoil Interceptor oil would be good too. Beyond gas and 2-stroke oil, there are no fluids to check. You may want to test the battery and/or get a battery tender. Good luck, and enjoy the summer. We will be up by TC the end of June. Pump oil should be checked zerk fitting maybe?
( i assume that ski has one, and only one right?) if your really ambitious you can inspect & clean the carbs. Agree on the oil, amsoil or quicksilv is just fine, just buy the right kind. You mentioned lake & summer, so i'm assuming this will be spending some time outdoors for the next few months? A solid coat of wax and a can of corrosion block or fluid film would be recommended to help protect the important parts from the elements, clean out the inside of the hull with some purple power and a pressure washer, try to get it all clean inside, and then make it all slimey with the corrosion block, a battery tender might be a good idea, i don't use stabil but some swear by it. Maybe a good time to assemble a mobile tool/repair kit, tools, sockets, wrenches, zip ties, etc.
Thanks for the welcoming! Well so far i changed out the fuel lines, compression is 144 and 142.
Havent check the wear ring and i just took a peak at the impeller from the back(havent had the time to take it apart. Battery is new but i did go out and buy a battery tender. Spimothy, i have no idea what i zerk fitting is, looks like i have some research to do the ski will be outdoors but it will only be left in the water when were are there.
I will be pulling it out covering it and leaving it under my patio roof. Im going on the previous owners word an leaving the carbs alone. He told me that honda east rebuilt them during this winter. Thanks for everything guys! Any other advice is much appreaciated! That fitting needs two squirts of grease. You don't want to overfill, then clean off the nasty disgusting PTO Cover and put it back on, what I do on mine actually is have a small notch cut out of the PTO Cover so I don't have to remove it anymore to get to the zerk.
(might not work as well since my cover is a little different) I also replaced the stock nuts with plastic wing nuts so removal of the cover is MUCH easier. A disgusting and/or neglected PTO is usually a good indicator on how good of a job the PO did on maintaining the ski, but even my cover is pretty disgusting after a few rides. Oh and ps.no worries, I had my yamaha for a full year before a friend told me that i had not one, but TWO lubrication points. After that 'lesson' i actually decided to read my owners manual and found out a hell of a lot more than 'the throttle is on the right' inside.
If you don't have a manual. U can get it here.
Just an update. I pulled the cover off last night and it was fairly clean, i did have TWO fittings and greased em' both up till i saw the seal expand. Did a little wipe down and put the cover back on. It already had plastic wignuts which was nice. Changed out the spark plugs and waxed the hull. Now i just need to find the quicksilver oil before this weekend:willynilly. Checked both walmarts around me and neither carry it.
Checked autozone and oriellys. Looks like im going to have to make an unwanted trip to the marina.

Ps- how often should i grease the zerk fittings? Another Update. I had the ski in the water the last 2 weekends, was running great and put roughly 6 hours on her. Well last sunday i went to take it from the dock an drive it across the lake to trailer back to my cottage. It was hard to start but eventually got her to turn over no biggie. Drove the ski across the lake put it on the trailer and went to run it idle on the trailer (still in the water) so run the gas out but the ski would NOT turn over. It just clicked and once in the while acted like it wanted to turn over.
So i pulled the seat off and found the NEGATIVE power go so hot it melted the rubber boot that covers the connection. Not really sure what is wrong?? Loose ground, bad battery, bad starter? Any suggestions would help to get me in the right direction.
Ive searched the internet with really no luck.
